Restormel Castle, Cornwall
Restormel Castle is secluded in the middle of some beautiful countryside overlooking the River Fowey in Cornwall. Dating to about 1100 most of the external walls are still intact although the castle took substantial damage during the English Civil War. The area of grazed grass leading up to the castle is where all the castle's outbuildings used to be - stables, tannery, smithy etc, it's hard to imagine now in such a peaceful spot what the hustle and bustle of medieval castle life must have been like. The site is now managed by English Heritage.
