Burnham Beeches Moat Autumn Panorama
A row of trees bathed in autumn sunshine along Hartley Court Moat in Burnham Beeches woods. The line of mostly coppiced Beech trees follows the moat, which originally would have protected a homestead dating from the 12th to 14th Centuries from intrusion by deer and wild boar into the inner area used for growing crop and living. There was a defensive palisade further out from the moat to protect against more aggressive intruders.
